Lusaka, 26 September 2023. Minister of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS) Hon. Mike .E.Mposha  says the Zambian Government through his Ministry enjoys continued interactions and  support from The European Investment Bank (EIB) in financing water and Sanitation projects.

The  Minister said the Zambian Government Is committed to meeting Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 6(six) On water and sanitation.

He affirmed the Government’s commitment stating that The President of Zambia Mr. Hakainde Hichilema launched The Zambia Water Investment  Programme ZIP in July 2022 meant to mobilize investment in the Water Sector amounting to 5.75 Billion USD  that anchors on Vision 2030 and the National’s Development Plans.

The Minister noted that the initiative was part of the  Continental Africa Water Investment Programme AIP that was adopted by African Union Heads of State in February 2021.

Among others, the Minister pointed out the Goals of the Water Investment Programme in Zambia which targets a Transformative stride through an improved investment outlook for water Security and sustainable sanitation for a prosperous peaceful inclusive, and equitable  Country by 2030.

The Minister recognizes the fact the  Water Investment program in the country seeks to mobilize 5.75 Billion Dollars during the period  2022- 2030 through  Grants Official Development Assistance, Public-Private partnership(PPP) international Financing initiatives, and climate financing.

“You may  wish to  know that the  Ministry implements Water supply and Sanitation Projects through commercial Water  Utilities (CU’S ) that are responsible  for water and sanitation services in both Urban and Rural  Water.” Said  Mr. Mposha.

He cited the Lusaka Sanitation Project (LSP) and  Copperbelt Water and Sanitation under a project that (EIB) was supporting.

The  Minister disclosed that investment Bank EIB is part of the financiers of the Lusaka Sanitation Program and the Zambia Water and Sanitation Project pegged at  300 Million USD earmarked to benefit more than 1,688,000 people.

“Overall progress of the project is at now at 78 percent while actual disbursement attainted to so far is at 2 percent out of the 102.5 Million EUROS from European Investment Bank EIB.,” revealed  Honourable Mposha.

He said the Government, was aware that the Bank was supporting  Zambia Water and Sanitation in Mufulira, Chingola, and Chililabombwe Districts in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia for 155 Million Euros which will benefit more than 500,000 people once Completed and was currently at 65 percent and actual disbursement attained from European investment Bank EID is at 57.6 percent out of the 75 Million Euros.

The Minister also urged EIB to continue supporting the water sector in Zambia to assist the nation in accelerating the attainment of Vision 2030 and Sustainable Development Goal Number Six(6) which seeks to ensure water and sanitation for all.

“May l appeal to EIB to be a partner in the implementation of the Zambia water investment program.
