Kafulafuta Water Supply Improvement Project (KWSIP)
Project Objective: To expand and secure a sustainable water supply for communities in the Copperbelt region through the construction of the Kafulafuta Dam and associated infrastructure, thereby improving access to safe and reliable water for domestic, industrial, and agricultural use.

Component A: Water Storage & Catchment Management
Component Allocation: USD 120 Million
Component Overview:
Component A focuses on the development and management of the Kafulafuta catchment to ensure long-term sustainability of the newly constructed water supply infrastructure.
Sub-Activities:

Construction of the Kafulafuta Dam, including river diversion, embankment formation, and spillway installation.

Hydrological and geological assessments to support long-term catchment protection.

Development of a Catchment Conservation Strategy involving community-based natural resource management groups.

Implementation of soil erosion control measures and reforestation of degraded buffer zones.

Establishment of a monitoring framework for water quality and sedimentation tracking.
Component B: Water Supply Infrastructure Development
Component Allocation: USD 280 Million
Component Overview:
This is the core infrastructure component aimed at transmitting water from Kafulafuta Dam to treatment facilities and end-users across the Copperbelt.
Sub-Activities:

Construction of a 160,000 m³/day Water Treatment Plant (WTP).

Laying of over 120 km of transmission pipelines supplying Ndola, Masaiti, Mpongwe, and parts of Luanshya.

Rehabilitation of existing water supply lines to reduce non-revenue water.

Expansion of distribution networks to reach newly developed peri-urban communities.

Installation of new pumping stations and reservoirs to improve pressure management and supply reliability.

Identification and registration of households for water service connection, with a target of at least 50% female-headed households benefiting from subsidized connections.
Component C: Institutional Strengthening & Capacity Building
Component Allocation: USD 49 Million
Component Overview:
This component aims at strengthening the operational capacity of water utilities and enhancing governance structures to ensure sustainability of the Kafulafuta Water Supply system.
Sub-Activities:

Capacity building for the Kafubu Water & Sanitation Company (KWSC) in asset management, financial planning, and customer service.

Strengthening institutional frameworks for dam safety, environmental management, and emergency response.

Training of local staff in modern SCADA-based water monitoring technologies.

Community sensitization programs on water conservation, tariff structures, and customer engagement.

Formation and support of community water stewardship groups to ensure long-term protection of the Kafulafuta catchment area.
