Mwense,Luapula Province — The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation’s Permanent Secretary, Eng. Romas Kamanga has commended Luapula Water Supply and Sanitation Company (Luapula-WSSC) for its innovative approach to delivering clean, quality water to the Mwense community.
The remarks came as he inspected a gravity-flow-based water project that stretches 25 kilometers from the abstraction points to the Mwense Treatment Plant.
Eng.Kamanga highlighted the technology-driven strides taken by Luapula-WSSC.
He noted that the Mwense abstraction point currently yields 2,500 cubic meters per day and described the initiative as vital and cost-effective, stressing that the gravity-flow system alleviates several operational and maintenance costs for the utility.
“This innovation is vital and cost-saving,” PS Kamanga stressed during the inspection. “It addresses operational and maintenance costs.” he added.
The PS also emphasized the broader environmental realities facing the sector, especially in the context of climate change, which affects both surface and ground water sources.
Eng. Kamanga pointed out to other technology options that could bolster water security, including floating pontoons for water intake, gravity-flow infrastructure for surface water, and solar-powered pumps for groundwater that can pump from depths of up to 120 meters for commercial boreholes.
He urged engineers across the water sector to continue innovating to ensure clean, adequate water reaches every citizen.
During his five-day tour of Luapula Province, Eng. Kamanga is expected to visit multiple water sector projects to assess progress and identify opportunities for further improvements in service delivery.
