SIAVONGA, SOUTHERN PROVINCE — August 2026: The Government has commissioned the Siakalinda Dam in Siavonga District, Southern Province, as part of its efforts to strengthen water security, enhance climate resilience and promote sustainable socio-economic development.
The dam was commissioned by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation, Eng. Romas Kamanga, who described the facility as a symbol of hope, resilience and opportunity for communities that depend on reliable water resources.
Constructed at a cost of over ZMW 38.3 million, the Siakalinda Dam has a storage capacity of 2.5 million cubic metres, a catchment area of 52.8 square kilometres and a height of 24.5 metres.
The investment is expected to directly benefit approximately 6,292 people and provide water for more than 16,376 livestock. It will support irrigation farming, livestock production and aquaculture, while contributing to improved food security, employment creation, household incomes and community resilience during periods of water stress.
Eng. Kamanga said the commissioning demonstrates Government’s continued commitment, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, to investing in climate-resilient water infrastructure that improves livelihoods and supports sustainable national development.
He also commended Construction for Africa Limited for its professionalism and technical expertise in delivering the project, noting that the successful completion of the dam demonstrates the value of Government-private sector partnerships in accelerating infrastructure development.
Eng. Kamanga further called on local communities, traditional leaders, the district council and other stakeholders to take collective responsibility for protecting and maintaining the dam and its catchment area.
He encouraged farmers, cooperatives and community members to make full use of the opportunities created by the investment and embrace climate-smart agricultural practices to improve productivity, diversify livelihoods and increase household incomes.
The commissioning ceremony also honoured the late Southern Province Permanent Secretary, Dr. Namani Monze, who was remembered for his dedicated service and commitment to the development of the province. A moment of silence was observed in his honour.
